Welland Fire & Emergency Services Issues Hefty Fines for Violations

Property owners and landlords issued large fines following violations

Welland Fire and Emergency Services has issued large fines after fire code violations were discovered at three properties. 

The Fire Prevention Division says on February 23rd, crews were called to the scene of a kitchen fire on Sherwood Forest Trail. 

No injuries occurred, and ten students were found to be living there, without working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms on the premises. 

On July 22nd, the landlord and corporate ownership plead guilty in court for failing to implement a fire safety plan, not having proper smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and not having a proper fire exit from the basement. 

Between the landlord and corporate ownership, a fine of $14,000 plus court costs was issued. 

On March 3rd, the Fire Prevention Division attended a property on Wallace Avenue in response to a fire safety concern. 

Officers found there were no working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms in the dwelling. 

In July, the owner was fined $13,000 plus court costs after pleading guilty. 

As well, Fire Prevention Officials attended a licensed marijuana grow facility on March 18th. 

An unspecified amount of fire code violations were discovered, and in July, the operator was fined $5,000 plus court costs for violations such as using temporary wiring and conducting hazardous activities.
