Residents say the area is growing, and safety is a concern, too many speeding cars
City of Welland is another step closer to installing a sidewalk on Quaker Road, from Niagara Street to Rice Road.
Resident Nadia Potter spoke to council, saying there's no plan to do so until 2026, but the area is growing with homes and a school.
She referred to comments she's received on Facebook on the danger. "A community member said she actually watched someone get clipped by a car, and the person just drove away... it was a hit and run. I'm sure it happens a lot more often than what we know about, because for someone to see it happen."
Council was reminded in some parts the shoulder is small, and the ditch is deep.
Councillor Tony DiMarco also referred to pictures she showed. "Those young ones and the mother, or parent, I can't really tell, walking on the side of the road... and living in the area for 48 years, Quaker Road has gotten so bad, especially with speeding."
Potter acknowledged the councillor for his years of advocating to get the sidewalk built.
City staff will prepare a report, to be presented to council.
