Expect More Police at Area Beaches

St. Catharines city council voting unanimously to spend more on police, following recent assault

City of St. Catharines making sure situations like a 17-year old girl getting beat up by a group of teenaged girls at Lakeside Park recently don't happen again this summer.

Council unanimously supported $40,000 in police patrols, after talking to the NRP.

Councillor Bruce Williamson recalls his earlier days on council, when there were problems at the beach.  "Where there were thousands of people there every weekend.  Police were there in force, often with the paddy wagon in tow.  There were lots of big issues that the police handled, there was some rough behaviour, so this is not something that's new."

He repeated it is safe for anyone to be at the beach, as recent problems are rare.

Councillor Kevin Townsend stressed the importance of NRP officers being there.  "It concerns me when we just have security guards down there, in that it's tough to put security guards in position where last year we saw groups in brawls, and shooting fireworks at each other."

Councillor Marty Mako was happy police were out Friday night, engaging with teenagers.
