It was put together with help from the federal government, aiming to reduce environmental impact
A proud day yesterday for the City of St. Catharines with the opening of its new fire station on Linwell Road.
It was put together with the help of $440,000 from the federal government, using solar panels, electric heating and cooling, two electric vehicle charging stations, and greater ability to retain heat.
Specifically, the city says it meets the Canada Green Building Council Zero Carbon Building Standard, producing on-site renewable energy, reduces carbon emissions, and shifts peak electricity demands.
The city says it also has a specialized bunker that washes gear free from contamination, reducing risk to cancer causing chemicals.
It also has a larger bay for trucks, washroom and changing facilities for men and women, and a barrier free washroom, something the city says was not in the former 1950s building.
Fire Chief Dave Upper says it's a modern building reducing energy use, lowering costs, and improving conditions for fire fighters.
