Municipal workers argue they're facing income insecurity due to rising inflation.
Niagara Region municipal employees will hold a rally in Thorold this evening.
Members of CUPE Local 1287 will gather at the Niagara Region headquarters at 6:00 p.m., ahead of the Regional Council meeting.
The union, which represents nearly 1,000 municipal workers, is calling on the region to address income insecurity amidst rising inflation.
According to a union survey, 34 percent of CUPE Local 1287 members have been forced to take on additional employment to supplement their incomes.
"Investing in the wellbeing of workers is an investment in public services," says Judy Murray, the president of CUPE 1287, referring to the retention and recruitment challenges at Niagara Region. "Experienced and trained workers are routinely quitting because they feel unappreciated and undervalued. If the Region of Niagara wants us to continue to deliver high quality of public services, it must take our concerns seriously."
Tonight's rally will be attended by CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn.
Last week, members of CUPE Local 1297 authorized the union to take strike action if negotiations fail, but no strike deadline has been set.
