OPP and RCMP Looking to Raise Awareness About Grandparent Scams

Fraud prevention campaign launched

A new campaign is being launched to raise awareness about scams targeting seniors. 

The OPP has teamed up with the RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. 

The Fraud Prevention Campaign will take place February 6th until the 10th.

Last year, victims across Canada lost about $9.2 million in emergency frauds like the grandparent scam. 

In these scams, seniors receive a call saying a family member has been involved in an emergency, and money is needed for bail or legal fees. 

The victim is asked to withdraw money from their bank, and instructions are given on how to deliver the funds. 

Anyone who falls victim to a fraud is asked to contact police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
