All fees will be waived for changing names on government ID
The federal government is changing the rules and will allow Indigenous peoples to reclaim their traditional names on passports and other government ID.
Ottawa made the announcement yesterday saying the new rule applies to all individuals of First Nations, Inuit and Metis background.
The move comes years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission demanded governments allow residential school survivors and their families to restore names that were changed by the operators of the schools decades ago.
