Niagara's regional chair also pointing out the four areas he won't cut, and that he's been talking to NRP Chief about what they need
We're getting a better idea of what the Niagara region will likely keep it's hands off of in the 2026 budget.
In his first meeting as Chair last week, Bob Gale made it clear, after talking with Chief Administrative Officer Ron Tripp, that social services, health, long-term care and homelessness will not be touched.
He repeated who is always on his mind. "We have to make sure that we are being very responsible with tax dollars. Sometimes in government it is easy to forget that there is only one taxpayer, and that they are feeling squeezed from all angles right now. If there is a chance to relieve some of that pressure, it is our responsibility to do that. I want to reassure our residents that we approach this budget review carefully."
The budget was supposed to be approved now, but council narrowly voted to give Chair Gale time to review the final draft.
He repeated he's always asking what implications are for taxpayers, especially with international uncertainty.
Police is also important. "I have also had several very positive meetings and conversations with the Chief of Police, regarding the police budget, and I look forward to that dialogue. I appreciate his willingness to continue to engage, and I will report back on February 12th with that package.
The budget increases almost 7% from last year, meaning another $225 for a household.
