St. Catharines Fire and Emergency Services is stressing the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
A residential property owner was recently found guilty of four charges for not having working alarms in their rental property on Village Road.
They now face a $2,500 fine plus court surcharges.
Fire Chief Jeff McCormick says you must have a smoke alarm on every floor of your home and you have to have a carbon monoxide alarm outside all sleeping areas.
He says tenants also have a responsibility to make sure the Fire Code is being followed.
"I would also like to remind tenants who live in rental properties to contact your landlord immediately if you do not have the required number of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms or if they are not working properly. It is against the law for tenants to remove batteries or tamper with the smoke or carbon monoxide alarms."
