A disturbing case of animal abuse, and resisting arrest, in Welland.
Police were called Monday afternoon to the Dennistoun and Hooker Street area, concerning an animal complaint call.
They learned a man was holding his shihtzu dog up on a leash, strangling it.
Police say the man then hit the dog 6 times into the porch of the house, before hitting it with a large stick, and then punching the dog multiple times.
When police asked the suspect to hand the dog over, he refused, leading to a fight between an officer and the suspect, but the officer managed to free the dog. When the man was told he was under arrest, he fought back and hit police multiple times in the head and face.
Eventually he was arrested, but not before two officers suffered minor injuries.
Police have charged 33-year old Glen J. Ireland of Welland with:
- Willfully cause unnecessary pain/suffering or injury to an animal
- Assault with intent to resist arrest (2 Counts)
He was held in custody, and had a bail hearing on Tuesday.
