Doctor praises efforts to stop COVID, while out west mandates to be stopped
Niagara's acting medical officer of health feels societal adjustments will help deal with COVID-19.
The Review reports Dr. Mustafa Hirji spoke to a Niagara District Council of Women panel, noting as the region faces a rising number of cases, we can learn from history. He says changes made a hundred years ago to water and sewage treatment helped stop people dying from diseases like cholera.
Today, he notes while vaccination or masks may not stop infection of COVID-19, they lessen the impact. And those tools are not enough to get us out of the pandemic, so history is our best teacher. He also credits everyone for efforts made to handle the pandemic.
However, there's a different attitude out west.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says there will be no vaccine mandates and no health restrictions to deal with COVID-19 this fall.
She says the provincial Human Rights Act will be changed to outlaw discrimination based on COVID-19 vaccine status, and the entire health governance system will be reorganized over the next three months.
Smith has blamed Alberta Health Services for botching the pandemic by not delivering promised extra hospital beds.
